How much fuel was imported by UNOC?

MT Navig8 Matines docked at the Kipevu Oil Terminal 2 with 60,000 metric tonnes of super petrol.

Another vessel, MT SINBAD, docked carrying 70,000 metric tonnes of diesel.

Uganda Energy Minister Ruth Nankabirwa said the first consignment imported under UNOC ends months of the deal talks, and the country’s reliance on oil marketers.

Nankabirwa reiterated that the move would cut prices for Ugandan motorists.

“It is a great milestone after over 12 months of negotiations between Kenya and Uganda. I want to assure Ugandans of cheaper fuel and quick supply in the coming days,” said Nankabirwa.

She said the first drop of petroleum products could be used in the country within three days.

How Uganda will transport its imported fuel

UNOC entered into a deal with the Kenya Pipeline Company (KPC) to transport the fuel to Kisumu and Eldoret, where it will be picked up by trucks.

KPA Managing Director Capt. William Ruto noted that the operationalization of the new KOT had streamlined marine oil terminal operations, created synergy, and enhanced safety and operational excellence.

He said that the facility handled a total of 9,636,098 metric tons of petroleum products in the year 2023/2024, symbolizing the Port’s efficiency in attracting more oil tankers to the Port of Mombasa.

Is UNOC licensed to import fuel?

Kenya allowed Uganda to import refined petroleum products directly via the port of Mombasa.

Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) licensed UNOC Ltd to carry out oil importation in Kenya.

President William Ruto and his Ugandan counterpart Yoweri Museveni oversaw the final signing of the tripartite agreement on May 16, 2024, which gave UNOC the green light to import oil.
