How much do public toilets in Nairobi charge?

The facilities charged KSh 10 for years, but the fees were recently revised. A spot check by TUKO.co.ke in the CBD established that all the public toilets had doubled the charges to KSh 20.

A toilet attendant who spoke to TUKO.co.ke attributed the hiked price to the high cost of living.

Nairobi Health Chief Officer Mosiria dismisses claims of 200 bodies in Githurai shooting: “Rumours”

“The prices of everyday commodities have gone up, and it is only appropriate to increase the cost,” he said.

He further admitted that most people who have been away from the CBD for a while are taken aback when they see the new charges.

“What made you increase the charges to KSh 20? I’d rather look for a back alley and relieve myself,” a customer said.

Hosea Otsyula, a city resident, said that the new fee made him rethink using the facilities.

“The price increase is unfair, Things are already expensive enough as they stand. I can’t imagine paying another extra KSh 10 for a short call.”

He further suggested that the KSh 20 be charged to those seeking a long call at the toilets.

“This might lead to an increase in the number of people doing their businesses in back alleys, and it will eventually lead to deterioration of sanitary conditions in the city.”
