Kenyan Supermarket Worker Narrates How Helping Customer Carry Cooking Oil Landed Him in Jail

A Kenyan man from Nyeri has narrated how an act of kindness to a customer landed him in jail for eight months.

Dominic Ngugi, who worked at the Chieni Supermarket, has been serving an eight-month sentence at a Nanyuki-based prison, which he said has ruined his life and taken everything from him.

In an interview with Inooro TV, Ngugi said his troubles started when he decided to help a customer carry a jerrycan of cooking oil.

“I was a line attendant, and this mysterious customer approached me while hauling her shopping trolley. The customer asked whether I could help with the two 20-litre cooking oil jerry cans she wanted to buy. As an attendant, it was part of my responsibility to help a customer carry heavy stuff, and so I did,” he recounted.

However, moments later, he learned that the customer had picked up the cooking oil from the customer service desk, where he dropped it and left without paying.

“The CCTV showed that I was the one who helped the customer take the cooking oil at the customer’s desk. I was thus suspected of colluding with the client to steal from the supermarket,” he said.

This kickstarted his legal battle, and he was later found guilty of theft.

After an eight-month stay at a Nanyuki prison, he is finally out of jail, and he admits he has lost everything.

“I am like a child. I am starting over with nothing as I have lost everything,” he painfully said.
