- Homa Bay satellite blood bank has been feted for being the best nationally in blood management
- Ministry of Health and county officials celebrated the new milestone in a ceremony held at the Homa Bay County Teaching and Referral Hospital
- Homa Bay chief officer of health Kevin Osuri told TUKO.co.ke that the achievement was because of locals’ generosity in donating blood
Homa Bay county satellite blood bank has been recognised for its exemplary services. It was named the best nationally in terms of blood management.
On Friday, July 5, officials from the Ministry of Health and those from Homa Bay county’s health department celebrated the new achievement.
This recognition comes barely one and a half years after a blood crisis was noticed in some parts of the country, particularly in Homa Bay county.
How did Homa Bay satellite blood bank become the best?
Speaking to the press at the Homa Bay County Teaching and Referral Hospital during the celebrations, Kevin Osuri, the chief officer of health, said that the Homa Bay county satellite blood bank has achieved the state of the most improved and the best managed according to Damu-Ke, a software used by the Kenya National Blood Transfusion Services to manage blood, tissues, and blood products.
“We could not achieve this without the generous residents of Homa Bay who have donated blood to save lives. We have noticed a significant reduction in deaths that would have been caused by haemorrhage while giving birth and other blood shortages in our facilities,” Osuri told TUKO.co.ke
Is blood donation free?
He noted that the blood quantity in the Homa Bay blood bank has also helped neighbouring counties.
“We have managed to give emergency blood donations to Kisii, Nyamira, Migori, and even Kisumu, where our blood is screened,” the chief officer noted.
In addition, Osuri explained that most of the blood they get comes from donors who give it for free. They then screen it to ensure it is safe for the recipient who also gets it for free.
“Blood is not manufactured anywhere. We get it from donors for free and give it for free to save lives. We can not take too much blood from an individual and subject them to harm.
They must undergo a rigorous test to establish how much blood they can donate safely. Do not be afraid of donating blood,” he said.
During the event, Homa Bay County Teaching and Referral Hospital was also awarded as the best-managed blood bank by the Fadhili Awards.
