“The numbers are encouraging, and we are happy to note that our customers have taken the call to update their meters seriously. We are almost at 30% of the targeted meters, and we are optimistic that all our prepaid customers will have updated their meters by the 31st August deadline,” said Kenya Power’s managing director and CEO Joseph Siror.

The campaign is part of a global exercise targeting all prepaid meters that use the Standard Transfer Specification (STS), a universal method for securely transferring tokens.

The deadline for updating all STS-compliant meters is set for the end of August 2024.

Why some have not received update codes

Kenya Power has adopted a phased approach to ensure a smooth update process. Prepaid meters are scheduled for updates in batches, and customers receive SMS notifications when their metre is due for an update.

Update codes are then sent to customers upon purchasing an electricity token.

“The phased approach has minimised system delays and made it easier to purchase tokens and access the update codes. We encourage all customers to update their meter once they receive the codes” Siror added.

While responding to a customer who asked why she had not received the codes to reset and update her meter on X, the electricity distributor noted the process is done in phases and the metres have been scheduled at different times.

Customers can also access their update codes through Kenya Power’s self-service platform by dialling *977#. This platform serves as a backup in case the SMS notification is lost.
